Some books I'm reading

Democracy In American Life, Avery Craven, 1941
This is book 1 of a 5 book series from the University of Chicago, transcripted from the "Walgreen Foundation Lectures 1940-1941"
The tagline from the dust jacket is: "What did democracy mean to it's founders?", "Has it meant the same thing to succeeding generations?".  Mostly covers an abbreviated history of how democracy was defined originally, and how those original values have been acted upon and warped into something else by supposed "free market capitalist" forces of industry, ie, the first real wealth hoarders of the United states.

I really liked this book, and recommend it, but it's kind of hard to find.  Last I saw, there were 2 copies on amazon, one for $17, and one for $85.  I found mine by chance in a junk store in Central PA for $2.

The Buddhist Way, Christmas Humphreys, 1996
There are a multitude of books out there outlining Buddhist ideals, precepts, and history, and most are probably pretty good, this is merely one that I've read.  A good general reference, but not a fast read.

(I try to follow the precepts and general guides for meaningful living, but don't follow some of the older ritual/spiritual stuff contained within, but that's one of the cool things about Buddhism is that it can be used as a guide without demanding belief of the unknown and un-provable.)

Marine Pollution (3rd Ed), R.B. Clark, 1986
This is an interesting book, but is quite dated.  The plastics pollution section doesn't even mention the Great Pacific Gyre!

If I get a few spare hours I'll rip through this one, but it's sitting at the bottom of my queue.

I found this book at a junk store in Boulder CO.

Vegan, the New Ethics of EatingVegan: The New Ethics Of Eating, Erik Marcus, 1998
This book may have had the most impact on me of any you'll see in this list.  I love this book! All facts in this book are cited with footnotes, and there are plenty of visual aides such as graphs, trend-charts, and photos from on-site investigations of what modern agribusiness looks like in action.

If you are at all curious about the science, specifically the environmental science of the vegan vs animals diet, please check this book out.  Amazon Link, copies starting at about $4.
